1999 Maintenance Notes

1991 Turbo

In ~April of 2015, we adopted a 1999 automatic with ~112,000 miles on it. Haven't done much to it yet (floormats and wiper blades when we first got it), but now the regular maintenance is starting, so here's a record of what I've remembered to record:

August 23, 2024 144,950mi

September 2, 2022 142,856mi

Disappointingly, the misfire returned. Oil was leaking from the valve cover gasket into 3 of the spark plug holes, so cleaned the valve cover, installed a new gasket, new plugs and wires, but no joy. Went with a Delphi coil pack this time, and time will tell how much better it is than the Beck, or not.

August 19, 2020 ~140,500mi

Drained & refilled ATF with Transmax V, seems like we only replaced about 2.5-3 quarts this way - of a 6 quart total capacity. Also drained & refilled differential oil - nothing terrible looking in there, just had never looked since purchase. Noted absence of shift linkage bushings, looking for replacements now.

December 29, 2019 138,700mi

Applied 3M 1080 vinyl to chin spoiler area - paint was flaking on the left side at time of application, might need to remove and re-apply if delamination becomes severe.

December 15, 2019 138,633mi

Oil and filter change, synthetic 10-40, again reused crush ring on the drain plug.

Somewhere around 132,000mi

Replaced shock absorbers with Bilstein-S. Also swapped wheels/tires with the 1991. in response to a bad alignment problem on the left rear, severe wear on the inside inch of tread (down to metal). Aligned at Big Chief tire, plan to have alignment rechecked in January 2020. Replaced eccentric alignment washer-bolts with new, hope to keep from having another "severe alignment drift" eat a tire. Headlights replaced with LEDs.

November 18, 2018 129,890mi

Oil change, Quaker State 10-40, Fram ToughGuard filter, reused the crush ring on the drain plug.

November 15, 2018 129,880mi

Ignition system refresh in response to a consistent misfire on cylinder #3:

November 29, 2017 124,100mi

Mostly preventative, triggered by a bad alternator - the rest I just didn't know the maintenance history - now I do, replaced all these with new:

November 1, 2017 124,000mi

August 2017

New top, Robbins cloth panorama.

March 5, 2017 120,829mi

Coolant change, replace with 50/50 Prestone Concentrate and Distilled Water.
Oil check, just above low and starting to look dark, topped up.
Brake fluid top-change with DOT4 SL200, old fluid was just a little dark
Blew leaves out of front fenders with leafblower, both from doors and by headlights

October 24, 2015 ~116,000mi

Rear brakes, pads, discs, and calipers replaced. Ceramic pads, and PowerStop powdercoated (red) calipers.
Old right rear caliper was seized, probably explaining the horrible grinding noise.

September 7, 2015 115,596mi

Existing filter was longer than usual, generic, and on tight; no crush washer was present, smells like a quickie lube job.
Existing oil was pretty clear, a little red in color and maybe pepperminty smelling like a little Marvel Mystery had been added.

1999 Dodge Ram

June 4, 2021 147,200mi

February 10th ish ~139,000mi

Replace original water pump (bearing squeaking) and coolant flush.
